10/12/24, 6:00 am

A joyful celebration by the Syrian community in New Zealand marking Syria’s liberation, with performances, songs, and expressions of unity.

On Tuesday, 10 December 2024, the Syrian community in New Zealand held a major celebration to mark the liberation of Syria. The event brought together community members and friends from diverse backgrounds to share in this historic moment.
The celebration featured artistic performances, patriotic songs, and revolutionary chants that reflected the spirit of victory and unity among Syrians both inside the country and abroad. Attendees exchanged congratulations and expressed their hopes for building a free and just future for their homeland.

Historical Background
On 8 December 2024, Syrians inside the country and around the world celebrated the success of their revolution, which lasted fourteen years and concluded with the departure of the former regime’s leadership from Syria.
This moment came after decades of rule by the Assad family, which governed Syria with an iron fist since 1970, marked by suppression of freedoms, absence of political life, oppression, and massacres against opponents.
The Revolution for Dignity and Freedom, which began in March 2011, faced brutal repression that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands and displaced millions. Yet, the Syrian people persisted in their demand for freedom and justice until victory was achieved in December 2024, opening a new chapter in Syria’s history based on dignity, justice, and equal rights for all.
